Dazaifu Tenmangu Art Program vol.6 Ryan Gander 'You have my word'

太宰府天満宮では、2006年に始動した太宰府天満宮アートプログラム第6弾として、2011年2月11日より4月10日まで、Ryan Gander（ライアン・ガンダー／1976年生・イギリス出身・在住）の個展 ‘You have my word’ を開催します。

Dazaifu Tenmangu is pleased to announce UK artist Ryan Gander 's solo exhibition 'You have my word'. This will take place at Dazaifu Tenmangu, Shinto shrines located in Fukuoka, Japan since 919. The works are exhibited inside the treasure hall and also out-door locations inside the property. This exhibition is part of 'Dazaifu Art Program', which started in 2006, aiming to make the collaboration between Japanese traditions of Dazaifu Shrine and contemporary art. Ryan Gander's exhibition will be the 6th exhibition of this program series, and also the first time to invite foreign artist. The exhibiting works are mainly sculptures and installation works including the time capsule artwork made with children at Dazaifu Tenmangu kindergarten. Also the 'NEW NEW DAY' project, which is his work to make a new national holiday just for the shrine, Gander designed a symbol character 'ARATA chan' as a lucky charm and also the poster was commissioned to the student at local design school to design.

テーマ「開放性／固有性」

朝は犬を連れた人が散歩し、昼は園児の庭となり、夜は恋人達が橋を渡る、太宰府天満宮。
その境内では千百年以上昔から変わらないだろう、明るい風景が広がっています。日本文化の基礎として綿々と受け継がれている神道の自然に対する考え方も、開かれたものであると同時に、そこは祈りを捧げる場所であり、非日常の「ハレ」の世界という固有な場を醸成しています。
太宰府天満宮アートプログラムは、太宰府天満宮の「開放性」と「固有性」を、アーティストが持つそれらに重ね合わせ、歴史の記憶を宿すここ太宰府の地から未来へ向けて、新たな文化の可能性とその発信を試みるものです。

Since 2006, aiming to to encourage the contemporary artists, Dazaifu Tenmangu started "Dazaifu Tenmangu Art Program". As the reflection of the essence of the shrine, the theme of the program is "glocalisation", a portmanteau word that points out the new direction of the possibility of culture. Besides the program has the mission to make a contribution to the promotion of the cultural development of the area. So Dazaifu Tenmangu Art program has invited various contemporary artists to Dazaifu Area and not only for holding the exhibitions but also has been purchasing the artist's artworks for their public collections of contemporary art as the cultural property for the area.

「もし神道に匂いや音があるならば、それはどんな感じだと思いますか？」

ガンダーの作品は現代に生きる我々のリアリティを題材にした、「世界を読み解くための装置」ともいえます。
アート、デザイン、建築など、ガンダーの作品のどれもが日常的に目にするものを素材としながらも、いつしか見る人を普遍的かつ抽象的な思考の冒険に誘い込んでいきます。今回ガンダーは、太宰府天満宮を取材してつくりあげた新作7点を発表します。異文化に育ったガンダーの作品群は、日本文化とその精神の本質を見つめ直し、私たちにとって新たな発見をうながすきっかけとなるでしょう。
